EIGHTEEN-year-old Samantha Wright lodged 48 rental applications in the past four months and was rejected every time.
That all changed on Thursday.
Samantha's applications to rent a house and flat were approved, giving the expectant mum a choice of rental homes.
She chose the two-bedroom flat, which she will share with a friend ? and she couldn't be happier.
Her rental prospects brightened after attending a Responsible Educated New Tenants (RENT) program offered through CentaCare Youth Services Port Macquarie and Youth Housing Support Mid North Coast.
The course teaches young people looking for independent accommodation about their rights and responsibilities and boosts their chances of securing and keeping affordable accommodation.
Before the course, Samantha waited for the rejection response after lodging each application.
"You already knew what to expect," she said.
The three-day RENT course late last month encouraged the eight participants to write a cover letter about their lives as part of the rental application process. That approach worked for Samantha.
"It's a relief (getting private rental accommodation) ... it's somewhere I can feel comfortable, relax and do stuff my way," Samantha said.
"The course answered so many of my questions and frustrations."
The 18-year-old, who has been living in a Community Housing property, finished her Higher School Certificate last year and was accepted to study social sciences at university.
She deferred university and plans to study part-time by distance education down the track.
"I can do it by distance education because I now have a stable environment to focus on it more," Samantha said.
