THE behaviour of some people in Port Macquarie hasn’t been up to scratch lately.
A spate of senseless “keying” vandalism has left two car owners and a car yard with tens of thousands of dollars’ damage to vehicles.
The paintwork of 10 cars at Port Macquarie Holden on Gordon St was scratched by a vandal who climbed the business’s steel perimeter fence on Wednesday night.
Employee David Toulson said the attack was “ridiculous and pointless”.
“The damage is still being estimated but is likely to be in the tens of thousands of dollars,” he said.
Commercial vehicles aren’t the only cars being targeted. Port News employees Vivienne Rose and Rosalie Evans’ car doors, bonnets and boots were keyed on two separate occasions at the newspaper’s Milton Circuit premises.
Mrs Evans’ burgundy Ford Falcon was keyed on June 24.
Thinking it was a “one-off”, she didn’t report it to police.
Exactly two weeks later, Vivienne Rose’s car was vandalised in the same car park.
Mrs Evans said the attack was “nothing but mindless destruction”.
“These people obviously don’t have any value for property or any pride in themselves to do this,” she said.
Ms Rose was “devastated” by the $2500 damage her 1997 red Mazda Astina hatch.
A Port Macquarie police spokesman said malicious damage was on the decrease in the area.
“This month to date, 16 incidents have been reported to police up to July 9,” he said. “... our trend by day charts indicate that we are currently below average for this offence category.”
