7 in court over drug raids

9/05/2008 10:54:00 AM
AN alleged cannabis trimmer and crime syndicate cook appeared in Port Macquarie Local Court yesterday in relation to a $4 million Mid-North Coast drug bust.

The pair were two of seven accused who appeared before the court by audio video link from Mid North Coast Correctional Centre.

Police have charged 17 people with drug and weapons offences following a four-month investigation, Operation Panelling, which allegedly uncovered more than 200kg of cannabis at nine sites across the region.

Garry Michael Mason, 34, of Wyee on the Central Coast and Arlene Blencoe applied for bail but the request was refused by Magistrate Wayne Evans.

Andrew McMaster from the Department of Public Prosecutions alleged Mason had been a "paid employee" of the drug syndicate for about a month.

"His job was to receive parts of the cannabis plant to trim them up ready for sale," he alleged in court.

Barrister Leah Rowan told the court Mason had a low-level involvement in the alleged syndicate and wanted to enter drug rehabilitation.

"When someone is grappling with an addiction ... often it takes an extraordinary event such as an arrest to confront that level of addiction," she said.

According to police facts tendered to the court, Mason was arrested on April 30 when police were searching a premises in Ringtail Cl, Lakewood.

A search of the car he was driving allegedly found five topographical maps for the Kangaroo Flat, Bunda Bunda and Yarrowitch areas, as well as receipts for nursery and plumbing supplies.

Mason denied any knowledge of the items and has been charged with supplying a large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug and possessing a prohibited drug.

Mr Evans said it was alleged Mason "played an integral part in processing it for ultimate distribution" and refused bail.

North Haven mother Blencoe also sought bail, claiming the prosecution case against her was weak.

Solicitor Carolyn Kelly said the 25-year-old was the mother of a seven-year-old and four-month-old.

"She needs to be free to breastfeed her four-month-old," she said. "There is no provision in the justice system for a breast-feeding mother."

Mr Evans said it was alleged Blencoe lived with one of the principals of the drug syndicate.

"It is alleged that one of the actual parts that she played was to organise food for the people actually involved in the growing," he said.

North Haven mother-of-four Simone Lesley Croker, 29, Joshua Dean Arthur Dunn, 20, of Dunbogan, Luke Lewis Robert Scrivener, 25, and Paul Justin Bradbury, 34, both of Bonny Hills, and Shannon Robert Quinn, 25, of North Haven all appeared before court but did not apply for bail.

All matters were adjourned until July 10.
